The Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery was formed in 1990 after India hosted the 17th Annual Conference of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery in Bombay in 1989.
Origins
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the seeds of neurosurgery were firmly planted in a formal way in India. Over time, neurosurgery developed into a full specialty with distinct super-specialty areas, including Pediatric Neurosurgery and cranial base surgery.
The Need for a Dedicated Society
By the late 1980s, a clear need was felt to develop Pediatric Neurosurgery as a focused super-specialty within the broader sphere of neurosurgery in India. To fulfil this objective, the Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery was founded in 1990, immediately after the 17th Annual Conference of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery held in Bombay.
Founding Leadership
The Society was founded with Prof. S. N. Bhagwati as President, Dr. Ajit Banerji as Vice President, Dr. V. K. Kak as Secretary and Treasurer, and Dr. Geeta Prulekar and Dr. C. R. Deopujari as Executive Committee members.
Purpose and Growth
INDSPN was founded to promote the art and science of Pediatric Neurosurgery in India, improve the welfare of children in India, and advance Pediatric Neurosurgical knowledge. The Society has steadily grown in strength and now has 500+ members.
